Job Title: Project Consultant -Attorney, Juvenile Lifers Project, Training Research and Appeals Division
This is a temporary position for the duration of the project, expected to conclude on October 1, 2026.
GENERAL SUMMARY
The Michigan Supreme Court in the Poole and Czarnecki cases has held that mandatory life without parole (LWOP) is unconstitutional for individuals who committed First Degree Murder before reaching the age of 21. Those defendants are entitled to resentencing. These decisions are retroactive and require review of all relevant cases.
Wayne County has approximately 400 defendants serving mandatory LWOP sentences who will require resentencing. By statute, our Office must notify the circuit court and each defendant whether the prosecution will seek a continued LWOP sentence or a term-of-years sentence.
COMPENSATION: $60 per hour. (Part-time or full-time, 20 ? 40 hours per week; schedule negotiable)
QUALIFICATIONS: Juris Doctorate Degree; must be a member in good standing of the State Bar of Michigan; possess effective oral and written communication skills; highly organized and extremely motivated. Must have a minimum of 3 years of experience, preferably with a prosecuting office or agency, in litigating trials, issuing warrants, or writing appeals.
