Job Description:
The Assistant Director of Academic Success will play a critical role in fostering the academic success and ultimate bar readiness of law students. The Assistant Director of Academic Success will teach academic success and/or bar readiness courses. Working as part of the team that includes the Director of Academic Success and the Director of Bar Success, the individual will develop academic success programming and provide advising to law students. The Assistant Director of Academic Success will collaborate with faculty and staff to identify students who may benefit from academic support, and meet with students to offer tailored support, guidance, and strategies for academic success. This position will involve developing course-based and non-curricular peer support initiatives, including working with a group of student mentors and fellows, and supporting the growth of the Legal Writing Center. Additionally, the individual will contribute to programs aimed at enhancing students? bar readiness. The position will also involve data collection regarding academic success and academic success initiatives at the law school.
Responsibilities:
  • Teaching academic success and/or bar readiness courses
    Teach Rules and Reasoning and/or other courses designed to enhance students? academic success and bar readiness.
  • Developing and implementing academic success programming
    Design and implement academic success programs for all law students, including programs specifically for at-risk students. This includes planning and running workshops, orientation programs, and ongoing academic skills sessions. Gather and analyze data related to academic success and bar passage rates to help refine and improve academic success programming.
  • Academic success advising
    Collaborate with faculty and staff to identify at-risk students and provide the necessary support to enhance their academic success; provide counseling to students on strategies for improving academic performance, time management, and preparation for exams.
  • Managing peer support programs
    Oversee the coordination and development of peer support programs, including Academic Success Mentors, Law Scholars, and Legal Writing Fellows, to support law students? academic success.
  • Collaboration and professional engagement
    Participate in law school committees and engage in service activities that support the broader goals of the institution; engage with national community of academic success professionals and ensure that the law school?s practices align with best practices in legal education; and other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
Education: Juris Doctor
Experience: License to practice law in at least one U.S. state or the District of Columbia; prior teaching experience in academic/bar success, legal writing, or other relevant field, or an equivalent combination of three years of practice experience and adjunct teaching.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience: Previous experience in academic success, legal writing, or other law school teaching; scholarship in learning theory and academic support; experience in the practice of law. Experience in executive functioning coaching and/or the provision of learning supports.
Conditions of Employment:
Evening hours may be required.
