Who We Need:
We're seeking a business-minded Product Counsel to join our growing legal team. This role is ideal for a lawyer who thrives in a fast-paced environment and is excited to work closely with product, engineering, marketing, and design teams to bring innovative products to market while managing legal risk and compliance.
What You'll Do
- Serve as the primary legal advisor to product and engineering teams on the development and launch of new features and services
- Provide strategic and pragmatic guidance on a range of product-related issues including privacy, data protection, IP, consumer protection, and regulatory compliance
- Draft, review, and maintain user-facing legal documents, including Terms of Use, Privacy Notices, Acceptable Use Policies, and in-product disclosures
- Partner with cross-functional stakeholders to assess risk and drive compliance solutions at every stage of the product lifecycle
- Review product-related public communications, including marketing claims, and terms of service
- Support incident response teams when security or data privacy issues arise
- Stay current on relevant laws and regulations (e.g., GDPR, CCPA, CPRA, AI regulations) and translate them into actionable guidance
- Collaborate with the broader legal team on commercial, privacy, and compliance initiatives
Skills You'll Need to Have:
- J.D. from an accredited law school and active membership in at least one U.S. state bar
- 5+ years of relevant legal experience, including at least 3 years at a reputable law firm with a focus on technology or privacy
- Strong experience drafting and updating Terms of Use, Privacy Notices, and other customer-facing legal content
- Deep understanding of U.S. and international data privacy laws and digital product regulations
- Proven ability to work cross-functionally and influence without authority
- Practical, risk-balanced approach to legal problem-solving
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- A collaborative spirit, low ego, and a sense of humor
Nice to Have
- Experience supporting products that use AI or machine learning
- Knowledge of open-source licensing and IP issues in a SaaS environment
- International legal experience (especially in the EU, UK, or Canada)
