General Summary

This position may be filled as a Maintenance Worker II or Maintenance Worker II, depending on qualifications.

The Public Works Public Service Division is responsible for City street and sidewalk infrastructure and public right-of-way maintenance functions (i.e. concrete, asphalt, marking), responding to and investigating hazards, complaints, and other issues associated with streets and sidewalks. The Maintenance Workers are part of a crew responsible for flagging, digging, work marking, concrete/asphalt repair, and other street and sidewalk installation and maintenance assignments. Responsibilities may also include manual labor and equipment operation related to seasonal programs such as leaf collection, trash pick-up/disposal, and emergency snow removal.

As of March 28, 2024, this position is part of the Labor and Trades bargaining unit, as defined by the City's Collective Bargaining Ordinance (Ordinance No. 22-128). in accordance with the Labor and Trades Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) effective July 1, 2025. This pay rate cited below will apply to individuals hired into this position on or after July 1, 2025. Future wage adjustments are subject to terms and conditions of the collective bargaining agreement between the City and the exclusive bargaining representative. Starting pay for this position is based on applicable education, experience, and internal equity:

  • The preferred hiring amount for the Maintenance Worker II is between $19.12 to $23.50 an hour ($39,769.60 - $48,880.00 Annually).
  • The preferred hiring amount for the Maintenance Worker III is between $20.45 to $25.14 an hour ($42,536.00 - $52,291.20 Annually).

The Maintenance Worker II performs routine semi-skilled work in a variety of construction, repair and maintenance assignments involving the use of common tools and operates equipment in connection with the semi-skilled tasks to which assigned; does related work as required. Primarily and most frequently the work done here is under general supervision, with related functional areas and more advanced applications.

The Maintenance Worker III p erforms responsible semi-skilled work in a variety of construction, repair and maintenance assignments involving the use of specialized tools; occasionally operates specialized and other equipment in connection with the semi-skilled tasks to which assigned. Does related work as required.

Essential Responsibilities and Duties

Maintenance Worker II

  • Responsible for facilities, grounds and/or City infrastructure maintenance functions;
  • Assists with construction and maintenance projects;
  • Performs simple repair and completes maintenance assignments;
  • May be exposed to or required to use chemicals in general maintenance responsibilities;
  • Assists senior workers in semiskilled work and the use of hand tools and maintenance equipment;
  • Operates hand tools and power equipment associated with custodial, construction and maintenance operations;
  • May operate vehicles as required;
  • Must have the willingness and flexibility to work as a member of one or several teams;
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Maintenance Worker III

  • Responsible for facilities, grounds and City infrastructure maintenance functions;
  • May have a lead role or be responsible for construction and maintenance projects;
  • Performs repairs and completes maintenance assignments;
  • May be exposed to or required to use chemicals in general maintenance responsibilities;
  • May serve in a lead role in skilled work and the use of hand tools and maintenance equipment;
  • Operates hand tools and power equipment associated with custodial, construction and maintenance operations;
  • Operates vehicles as required;
  • Must have the willingness and flexibility to work as a member of one or several teams or independently to complete assigned tasks;
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Education, Experience and Skills

Maintenance Worker II Qualifications:

  • Any combination of education and experience equivalent to high school or vocational school diploma or GED. (If no diploma or GED is obtained, must have a minimum of 2 years of direct work experience in the field.)
  • General knowledge of maintenance, repair and/or construction activities.
  • General knowledge of mechanical and automotive equipment.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age by start date.
  • May require a valid VA driver's license by employment start date.
  • May require the ability to obtain a CDL within 6 months of hire.
  • Skills: Some knowledge of the maintenance, repair and manual tasks of the area to which assigned; some knowledge of the safe use and operation and preventive maintenance of the common hand and power tools required in the work; some knowledge of the safe use, operation and preventive maintenance of the equipment to which assigned; skill in the use of the equipment to which assigned; ability to perform manual labor for extended periods, often under unfavorable weather conditions.

Maintenance Worker III Qualifications:

  • Any combination of education and experience equivalent to a high school diploma or GED . (If no diploma or GED is obtained, must have a minimum of 2 years of direct work experience in the field.)
  • Requires a minimum of 1 year experience in a similar position as a skilled worker in the maintenance, repair and or construction activity to which assigned; (Examples of relevant experience include right-of-way or transportation maintenance, repair and/or construction activities such as asphalt, concrete, forming, traffic control, trenching, utilities related work, etc.)
  • Some prior experience in the operation of the equipment to which assigned.
  • Must have valid VA driver's license by employment start date.
  • May require the ability to obtain a class A CDL within 6 months of hire.
  • May require the ability to obtain a Pesticide Applicator certification.
  • Must successfully pass a pre-employment physical.
  • Skills: General knowledge of the maintenance, repair and manual tasks of the area assigned; general knowledge of the use of common hand and specialized power tools required in the work; general knowledge of the safe use and operation and preventive maintenance of mechanical equipment required in the work. Skills in the use of equipment to which assigned; ability to perform manual labor for extended periods often under unfavorable weather conditions; ability to be contacted by phone in case of emergency.

Physical Conditions & Additional Information

Position may require employees to work a flexible schedule including evenings and weekends.

Physical requirements for this position as outlined by the Department of Labor: Heavy work. Ability to lift up to 100 lbs. occasionally and/or up to 50 lbs. frequently and/or up to 20 lbs. constantly to move objects.

Requires the ability to perform strenuous manual labor, often under unfavorable conditions, including considerable walking, lifting, stooping and carrying.

Positions in the Public Works Departments are subject to mandatory emergency and stand by call and with minimum response time requirements.

Position is subject to federal DOT drug and alcohol testing regulations.

3. RETIREMENT:

Pension:

+ Choose from two (2) options:

  • A Defined Benefit Pension plan pays a monthly benefit in retirement using a defined formula based on the employee's earnings history, tenure of service, and age. Our plan has a 5-year vesting period and an employee contribution of 5% of salary.
  • A Defined Contribution 401a plan in which fixed contributions are paid into an individual's account by the employer, the contributions are invested, returns (positive or negative) are credited to the account, and the account balance is used to provide retirement benefits. The vesting schedule for our 401a plan is 33% after one year of service, 67% after two years of service, and 100% vesting after three years of service. There is no required contribution from salary. (Note: the Defined Contribution retirement plan is the only plan available for Library employees).

Supplement: Deferred Compensation 457 available for you to invest your own money for additional retirement savings.
