General Summary

Jefferson-Madison Regional Library is seeking candidates to be considered for a Courier position at the Central Library who are highly motivated and who support JMRL's Mission Statement to foster personal growth and life-long learning for all by connecting people with ideas, information, and each other.

The preferred starting salary for this position is $15.75 hourly ($32,760 annually). Starting offer is based on applicable education, experience and internal equity. This is a full-time, non-exempt, position which provides excellent benefits including 13 paid holidays, plus paid vacation and sick leave, health insurance options with employer contribution, employer-paid life insurance, City's retirement options, gym membership reimbursement, and continuing education/training opportunities.

This position performs responsible work making consistent deliveries of general items to all agencies of the Jefferson-Madison Regional Library (JMRL) and monitors the routine and preventative maintenance of delivery vehicles, under the general supervision of the Circulation Manager.

Essential Responsibilities and Duties

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.   • Loads/unloads material onto courier truck, sorting and repacking materials as needed.
  • Communicates effectively with library staff at all locations, ensuring all items to be taken out are collected daily. In addition to library materials, this frequently includes interdepartmental mail, equipment, supplies, money, checks, kits, and items for library programs (Legos, iPads, Chromebooks, etc.).
  • Operates a vehicle in the performance of the job duties and exhibits safe driving practices (adhering to speed limits/other driving regulations).
  • Promptly coordinates routine maintenance for the courier trucks. Communicates any vehicle issues to the Business Manager.
  • Ensures that items being transported are safe from damage by protecting bins when inclement weather occurs.
  • Stacks bins in a stable manner, taking every precaution to protect materials from damage during transport.
  • Interacts with both JMRL staff and the general public in a courteous manner.
  • Distributes incoming deliveries to the Central Library to appropriate departments.
  • Requires a flexible schedule including days, evenings, and weekends.
  • Responsible for appropriate use and maintenance of JMRL equipment, tools, and other resources, including work time.
  • Regular and reliable attendance.

Other Duties

  • Performs additional duties to support operational requirements as apparent or assigned.

Education, Experience and Skills

Education and Experience:

Minimum Qualifications: Candidates may qualify by demonstrating the required knowledge and skills outlined for the job through experience(s) other than formal education.

  • High School diploma or GED.

OR

  • Some experience as a delivery driver.

OR

  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered in lieu of the specific requirements listed above.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prior experience as a delivery driver.
  • Prior work or volunteer experience in a library environment or customer service experience.

Certifications/Licenses/Other Requirements:

  • Valid Virginia driver's license and maintain an acceptable driving record.
  • Required to successfully pass a pre-employment background check and DMV Records check.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND OTHER CHARACTERISTICS:

Job Knowledge:

  • Knowledge of safe vehicle operation, loading and unloading procedures, and applicable federal, state, and local driving laws.
  • Knowledge of basic routine and preventative vehicle maintenance (e.g., tire pressure, oil changes) to maintain vehicle readiness.
  • Familiarity with delivery processes, including package handling, tracking systems, and completion of delivery documentation. Ability to accurately record delivery details and customer interactions.
  • Knowledge of best practices for safely lifting and moving heavy objects.
  • Knowledge of Charlottesville, VA, and surrounding areas, including common delivery routes, traffic patterns, and local roadways to ensure efficient and timely deliveries.

Reading:

  • Basic: ability to understand the meaning of commonly used multi-syllable words and simple paragraphs. Comprehends simple written instructions, signs, and notices

Writing:

  • Basic: ability to write simple letters, paragraphs and sentences containing subject, verb, and object, and/or series of numbers, names, and addresses.

Physical Conditions & Additional Information

Physical Demands:

  • Work requires bending, kneeling, stooping, lifting, carrying, reaching, handling, and pushing/pulling.
  • Must be able to remain in a stationary position while operating a motor vehicle for extended period of time.
  • Must have the ability to drive at night.

Machines, Tools, Equipment, Software and Hardware:

  • Operates delivery vehicle, uses hand truck or book cart, and any other equipment as appropriate or as assigned.

Work Environment:

  • Work is typically performed in office environment where there may be exposure to computer screen for extended periods of time, monitor glare and dust.
  • The worker is subject to outside environmental conditions while traveling around the JMRL service area (including days and evenings) where the worker may be exposed to moderate noise, vibration, and atmospheric conditions.
