Job Overview
The New Mexico Department of Justice seeks a highly motivated Honors Attorney to join the Medicaid Fraud and Elder Abuse Division (MFEAD). Candidates should be newly licensed, having recently graduated law school or completed a judicial clerkship, and have an interest in criminal and civil litigation, preferably in the area of nursing home abuse/neglect and/or qui tam actions. The Honors Attorney will carry a caseload of matters from the inception of an investigation through the settlement/judgment of a civil case or the judgment and sentence in a criminal case, and help the MFEAD to place itself on the cutting edge of civil and criminal litigation. Duties

- Represent the State of New Mexico in criminal and civil matters related to Medicaid fraud and elder abuse crimes.

- Prosecute criminal and civil cases from screening to final disposition.

- Coordinate with auditors, medical professionals, information specialists, special agents, and other attorneys to hold wrongdoers accountable.

- Analyze and recommend charging decisions.

- Ensure the protection of the rights of crime victims.

- Engage in special projects to develop novel, cutting edge legal theories.

Skills

The skills necessary to be an effective attorney within the MFEAD include:

- Juris Doctorate degree from an accredited school of law, law review, and a recent judicial clerkship are preferred. Must be licensed as an attorney by the Supreme Court of New Mexico or qualified to apply for limited practice license (Rules 15-301.1 and 15-301.2 NMRA).

- Strong interest in civil and criminal litigation, preferably in the area of healthcare policy and nursing home abuse/neglect and/or qui tam actions.

- Superior writing ability, including drafting substantive motions/responses, as well as other legal memorandum as assigned.

- Superior legal research skills.

- Ability to work independently while managing priorities and juggling multiple tasks/cases.

- Motivation to thrive in a team environment which includes law enforcement and other professional civilians.

- Willingness to travel across New Mexico as needed for pretrial interviews, courtroom appearances, training, and other work-related matters.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $69,000.00 - $70,000.00 per year
