Job Description

Beveridge & Diamond, P.C. seeks an environmental attorney (Of Counsel or Shareholder) with at least nine years of experience, including experience with the Maryland Office of the Attorney General representing the Maryland Department of Environment. The attorney will advise and represent clients in high-stakes environmental matters, with a particular focus on Maryland. This attorney will counsel clients on a range of Maryland and Federal regulatory matters, that may include permitting, litigation, remediation strategy and support, and environmental aspects of transactional matters. The ideal candidate will be prepared to provide strategic guidance to help clients to navigate complex regulatory landscapes and mitigate legal and business risks. This role presents an opportunity for an experienced practitioner to leverage their knowledge, to build and expand client relationships, and contribute to the vitality of the Firm?s environmental practice. The ideal candidate will bring deep regulatory and litigation experience, strong business development acumen, and a commitment to collaborative leadership within the Firm. Qualifications The ideal candidate has significant experience working on environmental issues in Maryland state government. A scientific background is a plus. J.D. from an ABA-accredited law school with excellent academic credentials. Status as an active member of the Maryland bar, or status as an active member in good standing of the bar in at least one state or the District of Columbia, and the ability to become admitted to the Maryland bar. At least 9 years of complex legal experience in the areas described in this job description. Key Competencies and Expectations Deep regulatory and litigation experience, with a strong track record of handling complex environmental matters in Maryland. Ability to navigate and influence complex regulatory landscapes, leveraging deep subject matter expertise to anticipate industry trends and client needs. Proven ability to lead and manage complex environmental matters independently, including regulatory counseling, litigation, and transactional support, while fostering collaboration across teams. Highly developed analytical, research, and drafting skills, with a demonstrated ability to craft persuasive arguments, regulatory analyses, and strategic legal solutions. Exceptional strategic thinking and problem-solving skills, with the ability to provide high-level guidance on nuanced legal issues and business risks. Strong business development acumen, including the ability to cultivate and expand client relationships, develop new business opportunities, and contribute to the Firm?s strategic growth. Attorneys transitioning from government roles should demonstrate transferable skills, such as regulatory expertise, stakeholder engagement, and the ability to navigate complex policy and enforcement landscapes, to effectively support client development and practice growth. Commitment to collaborative leadership, mentoring junior attorneys, contributing to Firm initiatives, and fostering a collegial and inclusive team environment. Strong interpersonal and communication skills, including experience advising sophisticated clients, engaging with government agencies, and representing clients in high-stakes negotiations or litigation. Commitment to mentorship and professional development, including supporting the growth of junior attorneys and contributing to Firm initiatives. Strong organizational and time management skills, capable of overseeing multiple client matters, deadlines, and firm priorities effectively. Commitment to professional excellence, ethical practice, and continuous learning, maintaining the highest standards in client service and legal strategy. Flexibility and resilience in a demanding practice, demonstrating the ability to manage shifting priorities and client needs with poise and efficiency. Compensation In accordance with applicable pay transparency laws, the base salary range for this position is $230,000 - $300,000 annually, depending on qualifications and experience. This range reflects the base salary that the Firm reasonably expects to pay for a Principal-level position. For successful Of Counsel and Principals, total compensation is likely to exceed the base salary range due to origination credit and other forms of productivity- and performance-based compensation. These additional components of compensation vary widely and are determined in accordance with the Firm?s compensation policies.
