The City of Worcester, Massachusetts (pop 205,319) seeks a talented and creative equity leader as its next Deputy City Solicitor. This Executive level position reports directly to the City Solicitor.

The Opportunity

The City of Worcester is seeking a skilled, strategic, and civic-minded legal professional to join our Law Department as the Deputy City Solicitor. This is a rare opportunity to practice law at the intersection of policy, public service, and leadership in one of New England?s most dynamic urban centers. As Deputy City Solicitor, you'll help shape the legal foundation of a city in motion. You'll serve as a trusted legal advisor to a wide range of departments, boards, and commissions, offering counsel on issues ranging from contract negotiation to ordinance development and public policy. Your legal work will directly impact the daily lives of Worcester?s residents and the future direction of our community.

This role is ideal for an experienced attorney who thrives in a fast-paced, collaborative environment and is ready to take on both the strategic and supervisory responsibilities of municipal legal leadership. You will lead a team of four attorneys, offering mentorship and guidance to ensure high-quality legal services, while also engaging legal work ranging from administrative hearing representation, advice and counsel, and complex legal drafting and negotiating.

The Deputy City Solicitor is a critical partner to the City Solicitor, expected to offer sound judgment, manage sensitive legal matters with discretion, and serve as a visible legal presence within city government. Your ability to balance legal acumen with diplomacy, analytical thinking with interpersonal skill, and precision with pragmatism will be key to your success.

Details:

• Salary 120-140k, plus benefits, vacation, pension plan
• One day per week remote option, after evaluative period, with four in office days

Qualifications:

• Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school
• Member of the Massachusetts Bar in good standing
• Valid motor vehicle driver?s license
• Minimum of five (5) years of related advice and counsel experience, municipal law experience preferred.
• Prior experience supervising or consulting with attorneys
• Strong knowledge of municipal law, land use, and contract drafting and negotiating
• Ability to attend evening meetings and work beyond standard business hours as needed
