Salt Lake Community College (SLCC) Office of General Counsel (OGC) located in Salt Lake City, Utah invites applications for the position of Associate General Counsel (AGC). SLCC is comprised of eight (8) campuses in the greater Salt Lake City metropolitan area comprised of varied study body exceeding 50,000 students. The college is an emerging Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI).The Associate General Counsel will serve as an important member of the General Counsel?s office and engage in a wide-ranging, challenging, and rewarding higher education in-house legal practice under the direction of the General Counsel. The person selected will be expected to provide risk-related advice and other legal services on a wide range of legal matters, including, but not limited to, intellectual property, Title IX, immigration, student affairs, real estate, rulemaking, and contracts.Practice areas also will include litigation management, policy development, administrative agency complaint matters, constitutional matters, compliance, responding to Government Records Access and Management Act (?GRAMA?) requests and subpoenas, and handling other matters as determined by the General Counsel.This position is at-will.
EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
Provide well-rounded, expert legal advice and counsel to various stakeholders throughout the College. Assist with the drafting, oversight, and governance of the College?s policies and procedures. Represents the Office of General Counsel at meetings and conferences, as required.Work with various stakeholders at the College to advise on legal implications in connection with issues and concerns raised by faculty, staff, and students.Prepare and review contracts and other legal documents for various College offices and departments.Handle or assist in the handling of College transactions, litigation and administrative proceedings relating to the attorney?s primary practice area(s).Conduct research and provide legal advice and counsel on regulatory, athletics, labor and employment, student affairs, litigation, and Title IX matters, as well as, vendor agreements, research agreements, and partnerships.Assume other duties as may be assigned by the General Counsel.Knowledge Skills & Abilities: Ability to communicate effectively with a broad range of people with a variety of abilities and backgrounds, to maintain good working relationships across the College.Ability to work with all groups from a variety of academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds, and with community college students, faculty, and staff, including those with disabilities. Work in a demanding environment with multiple deadlines and interruptions.Consistently exercise critical thinking skills to problem solve and determine the best use of resources for reaching goals to support the College?s mission.Demonstrated ability to build consensus and encourage collaboration.Flexible thinker who can balance conceptual thinking and ambiguity and who has strong attention to detail.Demonstrated use of technology, including phone-based access to emails and documents, to be accessible and provide top notch customer service to campus constituents.Employ time management skills including ability to prioritize effectively. Maintain a high degree of confidentiality.Able to work from the office. SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION
Experience in an attorney position working at a higher education institution, federal, state or city governmental agency, or similar experience in the private sector.Experience in the areas of contract drafting, review, litigation, employment law, intellectual property law, administrative law, and immigration law.Professional experience with the ADA/Rehabilitation Act and Titles VII, and IX. Experience advising on student or employee conduct matters.Experience providing legal assistance for compliance.
