The mission of the United States Attorney's Office for the District of Rhode Island is to enforce federal law fairly, effectively, and evenhandedly to promote the public safety of all Rhode Islanders and those who visit and work in the Ocean state. The United States Attorney is responsible for prosecuting federal crimes and representing the government in civil litigation in the United States District Court and on appeal.
Job Description
The U.S. Attorney's Office is currently seeking to fill one Assistant United States Attorney (AUSA) position in the Civil Division. Civil Division AUSAs are active at both the trial and appellate levels and manage a high-volume docket of cases.
The United States Attorney's Office (USAO), District of Rhode Island is responsible for representing the federal government in handling affirmative civil litigation based on violations of federal law, defending civil lawsuits against the government, and prosecuting actions to collect judgments and restitution on behalf of victims and taxpayers. Employment with the USAO offers a unique and challenging experience for the highly motivated attorney to litigate a broad range of cases involving significant and complex issues on behalf of the United States in federal court.

As a Civil Division AUSA, you will be part of a dedicated team helping to enforce federal civil laws that protect life, liberty, and property. Your cases will also feature a broad range of subjects, including personal injury, employment discrimination, immigration, prisoner litigation, and actions challenging governmental policies, activities and decisions, as well as affirmative investigations and cases involving fraud, and environmental enforcement. Day-to-day responsibilities include working with government agencies to gather information and evidence, retaining and working with experts, conducting civil investigations of claims of violations of federal law, engaging in motion practice and oral argument, taking and defending depositions, preparing and responding to written discovery, negotiating settlements, preparing cases for trial, trying cases, as well as briefing and arguing appeals.
Responsibilities will increase and assignments will become more complex as your training and experience progress.
Qualifications
Applicants must possess a J.D. Degree, be an active member of the bar (any U.S. jurisdiction) and have at least one year post-J.D. legal or other relevant experience.
Initial appointment is conditioned upon a satisfactory preemployment adjudication. This includes fingerprint, credit and tax checks, and drug testing. Continued employment is subject to a favorable adjudication of a background investigation.
United States citizenship is required.
Must reside in the district to which appointed or within 25 miles thereof. See 28 U.S.C. 545 for district specific information.

Salary
Salary Information: Assistant United States Attorney's pay is administratively determined based, in part, on the number of years of professional attorney experience. The range of basic pay is $83,741 to $195,100 which includes locality pay.
