GENERAL SUMMARY

The purpose of this job is to review and authorize requests for warrants, determine the appropriate charge and prosecute criminal cases. Presents criminal cases in the district court, is assigned felony cases consistent with the level of professional development, and assists with other matters as assigned. Attempts to resolve and dispose of criminal cases or tries cases in court. Represents the Family Independence Agency on child abuse or neglect cases, and assists with civil matters and other cases as assigned.



ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

The intent of this job description is to provide a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities performed by employees in this job. Employees may be requested to perform job-related tasks other than those specifically presented in this description.

  • Participates in employment interviews and selection, assists in the training of staff, schedules staff, assigns work, reviews work products and provides input to performance evaluation process.
  • Performs the duties described for an Assistant Prosecuting Attorney, including researching and preparing criminal cases for trial, appearing in court for pleas, sentencing, arraignments, pre-trials, trials and other matters to represent the prosecutor, and drafting various legal documents, briefs and memoranda.
  • Prepares calendar of work assignments and manages case flow, ensuring that all cases and courtrooms are properly assigned and covered.
  • Assists professional and support staff with inquiries related to operational and procedural matters.
  • Assists attorney staff in the analysis of specific cases, advises on case development and serves as a mentor on legal matters.
  • Assists in the development of policies related to the prosecution of criminal matters and assists the Prosecutor with the development of other policies as needed. Assists the Prosecutor in ensuring compliance with all policies and procedures of the office.
  • Assists in the research and development of technological resources, office management issues concerning case tracking, computerization of records, library resources, and may assist in the development of the office budget.
  • Serves in an on-call status to respond to requests for arrest and search warrants. Includes responding to police requests for search warrants for blood from suspected drunk drivers through the use of portable fax machines.
  • Advises and assists law enforcement officers in case preparation and other matters related to criminal prosecution. Gives legal advice and drafts and authorizes search warrants.
  • May act as office liaison with the courts, law enforcement agencies, other agencies and the public.
  • Acts for the Prosecutor in the absence of that official.
  • Performs related work as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Required Education and Experience

Education: Juris doctor from an accredited law school

Experience: Up to 1 year of related work experience, such as criminal law.

  • Any equivalent combination of training, education, and experience that provides the required skills, knowledge and abilities

Required Licenses or Certifications License to practice law in the State of Michigan

  • Accurately organize and maintain paper documents and electronic files
