Position Summary:The Ellis County Attorney?s Office handles general prosecution duties, including trial level felony, misdemeanor, juvenile offender, child in need of care, care and treatment and traffic. Opportunities for nearly unlimited courtroom and trial experience.

Essential Functions:

  • Supervises, directs and evaluates assigned staff, process employee concerns and problems, directing work, counseling, disciplining, and completing employee performance appraisals
  • Prosecutes felony and misdemeanor crimes, traffic, and/or juvenile offenses.
  • Represents the State in civil matters including child-in-need-of-care cases and care and treatment cases.
  • Supervises legal work in preparation for and presents court cases involving violations of state statutes
  • Advises officers and county officials on federal, state, and local laws and ordinances
  • Selects juries, presents evidence, examines and cross-examines witnesses, assists in the preparation of jury instructions, and presents final arguments in court
  • Conducts research on specific points of law
  • Performs and assists in the preparation and presentation of appeals
  • Works with other law enforcement agencies, court service agencies and various groups
  • Conducts continuing education programs for law enforcement, social workers, and other individuals involved in the criminal or juvenile court system
  • Speaks to schools, professional groups, and civic organizations about the County Attorney?s Office and current legal issues
  • Enforces and maintains compliance with all federal, state, and local laws and ordinances
  • Performs other duties as assigned or deemed necessary
  • Complies with all organizational and departmental policies and procedures
  • Operates all job-related equipment, machinery, tools, and other aids as required or needed
  • Protects and maintains any confidential information, whether oral, written, or electronic

Position Requirements:

  • Doctor of Jurisprudence (JD) from an accredited law school
  • Licensed and in good standing in the State of Kansas

Skills/Knowledge/Abilities:

  • Knowledge of the rules of evidence, criminal procedure, and civil procedure.
  • Excellent negotiation and rebuttal skills
  • Skilled in legal writing and research
  • Ability to effectively litigate cases in a court of law
  • Excellent time management skills and ability to multi-task and prioritize work
  • Ability to fulfill all duties with minimal supervision and to work independently
  • Assess situations rapidly and make logical decisions in a timely manner
  • Analyze facts and exercise sound judgment
  • Ability to effectively manage projects and multiple priorities simultaneously
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Problem solving and critical thinking skills
  • Ability to communicate in a professional, calm, and courteous manner with the general public, outside agencies and offices, and employees
  • Attention to detail
