Job Description
We are seeking a virologist to study the structure, growth, and characteristics of different viruses. You will investigate how these viruses affect humans, animals, and other living things. Successful virologists collaborate with other medical professionals to effectively perform their duties.
Job Duties and Responsibilities
- Collecting samples for research
- Using specialized techniques to study viruses
- Identifying different viruses through microscopic examination
- Studying the impact of viral infections on living tissues
- Analyzing substances released by viruses when they interact with living things
- Determining how viral diseases spread through populations
- Assisting in vaccine development
- Communicating research results through reports and presentations
- Helping organizations like the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) prevent and control outbreaks of viral infections
- Providing professional opinions and advice on treatment plans and outbreak control
Requirements and Qualifications
- Bachelor?s degree in biology, chemistry, or a related field
- Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) with training in virology, molecular virology, viral oncology, or immunology
- 3 to 5 years of postdoctoral research experience
- Knowledge of scientific and medical software, such as BD CellQuest and Protein Explorer
- Experience with laboratory equipment and tools
- Able to collect and analyze large amounts of data
- Detail-oriented with strong problem-solving skills
- Able to work on multiple tasks and meet deadlines
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
