The main responsibilities of an undertaker include meeting with families, arranging funerals and cremations, sourcing necessary items such as flowers and caskets, posting obituary notices, and coordinating with religious officials. It is important for the undertaker to minimize stress for the family and offer them support during this difficult time.
Job Duties and Responsibilities
- Meeting with families and explaining different funeral options and packages.
- Preparing the body for the funeral, which may involve embalming and applying cosmetics.
- Arranging for a casket, flowers, and transportation to the burial site, as well as coordinating with cemeteries for grave openings and closings.
- Contacting religious officials and organizing services, as well as informing mourners of the details.
- Gathering information from family members and handling all necessary legal documents.
- Writing and posting obituaries.
- Ensuring that all flowers and decorations are properly displayed at the funeral and welcoming and seating family and friends.
- Confirming funeral details with family members and creating a funeral program.
- Arranging food and drinks for mourners and addressing any questions or concerns.
- Completing administrative tasks, such as updating records and purchasing supplies.
Requirements and Qualifications
- Associate's or bachelor's degree in mortuary science or a related field.
- May need to have an embalmer's license.
- Completed apprenticeship.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Strong ethics and morals.
- Ability to multitask and show compassion towards grieving families.
- Good time management skills.
