We are seeking a skilled and creative taxidermist to create custom taxidermy pieces based on clients' needs and preferences. This includes preserving body parts like horns, claws, and teeth, repairing damaged tissue, and applying styling gel to enhance the final appearance of the specimen. You will also be responsible for ordering necessary supplies and ensuring the safety of both yourself and the client.
Job Duties and Responsibilities
- Meet with clients to discuss their needs, pricing, and turnaround time.
- Take measurements of the specimen to be taxidermied.
- Remove and treat the skin using preserving chemicals or tanning methods.
- Construct a body foundation for the skin to be placed on.
- Attach the skin to the body foundation.
- Preserve animal skulls or create them using artificial materials.
- Create and attach artificial body parts, such as eyes and scales.
- Airbrush and paint the specimen to create a natural appearance.
- Mount the taxidermied specimen onto a suitable mount.
Requirements and Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED.
- Completed training program in taxidermy.
- State license to practice taxidermy.
- Certification through the National Taxidermists Association (NTA) preferred.
- Previous experience as a taxidermist.
- Knowledge of animal anatomy.
- Ability to concentrate for extended periods.
- Good hand-eye coordination.
- Excellent communication and problem-solving skills.
