What does a Progressive Care Nurse do?

A progressive care nurse is a registered nurse who takes care of patients who are acutely ill. They closely monitor vital signs, detect changes, and provide necessary treatments. These patients do not need to be in an Intensive Care Unit, but their conditions require constant observation and care.

Job Description

We are looking for an experienced progressive care nurse to take care of patients in our progressive care unit. Your duties will include monitoring changes in vital signs, providing life-saving interventions, and adjusting medication doses.

To be successful in this role, you should have experience in caring for acutely ill patients and be able to work in a high-stress environment. A good candidate will be able to accurately interpret vital signs and proactively provide necessary treatments.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

  • Reviewing patients' medical history, medications, and test results upon admission to the progressive care unit.
  • Monitoring vital signs, such as heart rate, blood pressure, and oxygen levels.
  • Interpreting readings from specialized medical equipment.
  • Administering prescribed medication and adjusting doses as needed.
  • Performing diagnostic tests and providing necessary treatments.
  • Reporting any changes in a patient's condition to healthcare specialists and following their instructions.
  • Maintaining accurate and updated medical records.
  • Supervising nursing assistants and support staff in the progressive care unit.
  • Explaining treatments and procedures to patients and their families and addressing any questions or concerns.

Requirements and Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree.
  • Registered Nurse (RN) license.
  • Progressive Care Certified Nurse (PCCN) certification.
  • 3-5 years of experience as a progressive care nurse.
  • Proficiency in electronic medical record systems.
  • Expertise in interpreting vital signs and other medical measurements.
  • Knowledge of medication dosing and medical interventions.
  • Ability to follow instructions and collaborate with healthcare specialists.
  • Familiarity with best practices in healthcare and medical recordkeeping.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to provide support and guidance to patients and their families.
