What does a PACU Nurse do?
PACU nurses, also known as recovery room nurses, take care of patients who have undergone surgery and are recovering from anesthesia. They keep a close eye on the patient's vital signs, level of consciousness, and watch for any side effects from the anesthesia.
Job Description
We are looking for a dedicated PACU nurse to monitor and care for patients waking up from post-operative anesthesia. You will be responsible for monitoring their level of consciousness, taking vital signs, and treating any side effects from the anesthesia like pain or nausea.
To be successful in this role, you should have experience caring for patients after surgery and be able to handle a high-pressure environment. A good PACU nurse will make patients feel safe and reassured during their recovery from anesthesia.
Job Duties and Responsibilities
- Monitor patients' level of consciousness during recovery from anesthesia.
- Take and record vital signs.
- Watch for any signs of side effects from the anesthesia.
- Treat post-operative symptoms like pain and nausea.
- Update charts and medical records.
- Collaborate with the medical team on post-operative care.
- Comfort and reassure patients and their families.
- Educate patients and their families on post-surgery care and answer any questions.
Requirements and Qualifications
- Associate's or bachelor's degree in nursing.
- Registered Nurse (RN) certification.
- Certified Post-Anesthesia Nurse (CPAN) preferred.
- At least 2 years of experience as a nurse in a post-anesthesia care unit.
- Knowledge of electronic hospital management systems.
- Experience measuring and interpreting vital signs and level of consciousness.
- Advanced knowledge of patient care best practices.
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills.
- Strong organizational and time management abilities.
- Availability to work different shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
