What does a Orthodontic Dental Assistant do?

An orthodontic dental assistant helps orthodontists with procedures and provides information to patients about braces care. They set up appointment rooms, clean tools, and adjust braces as directed by the orthodontist.

Job Description

We are looking for an experienced orthodontic dental assistant to assist with patient consults and check-ups. Your responsibilities will include following the orthodontist's instructions, cleaning and polishing teeth before braces are put on, and removing braces when treatment is complete. You will also need to make sure all necessary tools are available during patient appointments.

To be successful in this role, you should have good hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity to keep patients safe during procedures. You should also have patience, organizational skills, and be a good communicator.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

  • Keeping accurate records of patients' oral health and treatment progress.
  • Sterilizing all tools and equipment before each use.
  • Using suction to keep patients' mouths dry during procedures.
  • Taking X-rays and photographs to help the orthodontist create treatment plans and track progress.
  • Making molds of patients' teeth for mouthguards and retainers.
  • Adjusting wires, coils, and elastic bands on braces.
  • Teaching patients about proper oral hygiene and caring for their braces.

Requirements and Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Associate's degree in dental assisting.
  • Certification as an orthodontic assistant by the Dental Assisting National Body (DANB).
  • License to provide orthodontic assistance.
  • CPR certification.
  • Previous experience as an orthodontic dental assistant.
  • Knowledge of orthodontic procedures and practices.
  • Good manual dexterity.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills.
