Job Duties and Responsibilities

  • Check, plan, do, and check again patient care plans with other healthcare workers.
  • Look at medical information and give special care to each patient before and after surgery.
  • Give patients medicine and write it down.
  • Change bandages, put in catheters, and start IVs.
  • Use special medical equipment and write down what you see.
  • Watch patients closely and tell the team right away if they have a bad reaction to medicine.
  • Work with the team to plan when patients can go home.
  • Answer questions and teach patients and their families about surgery and taking care of themselves after.
  • Keep patient files, medical charts, and health records up-to-date.

Requirements and Qualifications

  • You should have a bachelor's degree in nursing.
  • It is good if you have a certification as a medical-surgical nurse.
  • You need to have a license to be a nurse in your state.
