What does a Medical Support Assistant do?

A medical support assistant works in medical facilities to assist doctors with administrative tasks, record keeping, and scheduling patient appointments. They work closely with doctors, nurses, and other medical staff in hospitals, medical clinics, and private practices.

Job Description

We are seeking a detail-oriented team player to join our team as a medical support assistant. The role includes greeting patients, maintaining and recording medical data, managing patient accounts, and scheduling appointments.

To be successful in this role, you should have strong administrative and data entry skills. It is also important to be empathetic towards patients and supportive of doctors, and to work well in a team environment.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

  • Answering phone calls and emails and relaying messages to staff members.
  • Greeting patients and visitors, answering basic questions, and directing them to the appropriate departments.
  • Maintaining patient records and updating medical data, both manually and electronically.
  • Organizing paperwork and creating files for new patients.
  • Verifying patients' insurance information.
  • Assisting doctors with patient examinations, as needed.
  • Collecting and recording basic health information, such as height, weight, and vital signs, for doctors to review during examinations.
  • Documenting doctors' orders for patient care and scheduling appointments.
  • Tracking inventory and ordering supplies.
  • Maintaining employee timesheets and attendance records.

Requirements and Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • At least one year of vocational training may be helpful.
  • Certification, such as Certified Medical Assistant, may be advantageous.
  • Previous administrative experience and basic knowledge of medical terminology.
  • Experience with electronic medical records (EMR) and scheduling skills.
  • Basic computer skills, attention to detail, and organizational skills.
  • Excellent customer service and communication skills.
