What does a Dock Worker do?

A dock worker, also known as a longshoreman or stevedore, is responsible for loading and unloading cargo at ports, as well as preparing docks for incoming ships and securing them to moorings.

Job Description

We are seeking a hard-working and efficient dock worker to join our team. Your main duties will include loading and unloading cargo onto and off of vessels, unmooring ships when they depart, keeping track of damaged or misplaced cargo, following loading plans, and participating in training programs as needed. You will also be responsible for using rigging and lashings to secure cargo before departure.

To excel in this role, you must be able to communicate effectively with your fellow dock workers to prevent accidents and injuries. You should also be physically fit and capable of operating heavy machinery safely.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

  • Installing the gangway to receive incoming ships
  • Maintaining the oil spill containment boom
  • Tying ships to moorings for secure docking
  • Using equipment such as forklifts, hand trucks, pallet jacks, cranes, and winches to load and unload cargo
  • Inspecting unloaded cargo for damage or irregularities
  • Recording unloaded cargo data in spreadsheets
  • Communicating with other dock workers via handheld radios
  • Keeping the dock area clean and free of debris

Requirements and Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Valid forklift license
  • Prior experience as a dock worker
  • Excellent physical stamina
  • Able to operate heavy machinery
