What does a District Attorney Investigator do?
A district attorney investigator works for the district attorney's office and investigates criminal offenses. This includes both felony and misdemeanor cases. In some states, they are also called county detectives.
Job Description
We are looking for a district attorney investigator who is diligent and thorough in their investigations. This person will work with local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies, conduct undercover operations, and interview witnesses and suspects. They will also make sure that all evidence is properly collected and that no important information is overlooked. The district attorney investigator will also take photographs of crime scenes and create diagrams and charts to help with the investigation. They may also attend meetings with community groups and other organizations to discuss law enforcement issues.
To be successful in this role, the district attorney investigator should have a strong commitment to serving and protecting the community. They should also be highly organized and detail-oriented when collecting and preserving evidence. This job requires someone who can take initiative, make decisions independently, and act with integrity.
Job Duties and Responsibilities
- Conducting investigations assigned by the district attorney, either alone or as part of a team.
- Working with district attorney's office attorneys to prepare cases for court.
- Gathering, reviewing, and analyzing information.
- Serving legal documents, such as subpoenas and warrants, and locating witnesses.
- Coordinating the extradition of relevant parties.
- Interviewing suspects and witnesses and taking their statements.
- Preparing and reviewing reports.
- Advising the Chief District Attorney Investigator on the best course of action for each case.
- Testifying in court as needed.
- Collaborating with other law enforcement agencies at the local, state, and federal level.
- Representing the District Attorney's Office at meetings and conferences.
Requirements and Qualifications
- At least 2 years of college education in police science, criminology, or a related field.
- 3+ years of experience as a peace officer with a focus on criminal investigations.
- A valid police officer training certificate.
- A valid driver's license.
- Knowledge of modern investigative techniques and legal processes.
- Familiarity with relevant laws and regulations.
- Ability to maintain a positive working relationship with the District Attorney.
- Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
