What does a Crime Analyst do?
A crime analyst helps police officers, detectives, and investigators by using tools like crime mapping software, police reports, and geographic information systems (GIS) to find patterns that can help prevent and reduce crime.
Job Description
We are looking for a well-organized crime analyst to join our police force in the fight against crime. Your responsibilities will include collecting and analyzing data, doing research, creating reports, and making plans to prevent crime. You may also need to talk to community members, police officers, and suspects.
The ideal crime analyst will know the law well and be able to spot patterns quickly. They should also be resourceful, strong, and able to analyze data carefully.
Job Duties and Responsibilities
- Collect and analyze data to find trends in criminal activity
- Talk to patrol officers, investigators, detectives, community members, witnesses, criminals, and possible suspects
- Visit crime scenes to collect evidence like DNA samples and photographs
- Work with other professionals when needed
- Use police reports, statistics, and crime trends to write detailed reports
- Collaborate with other law enforcement to create and use strategies to prevent crime
- Attend workshops and take courses to stay updated on new technology in the field
- Cooperate with law enforcement by giving court testimonies and participating in raids
Requirements and Qualifications
- A bachelor's or associate?s degree in criminal justice or a related field
- Pass a background check and/or polygraph test
- Prior experience in law enforcement may be preferred
- Familiarity with software like LexisNexis Community Crime Map, ShopSpotter Missions, and Lynx Sentinel
- Good analytical and logical thinking skills
- Attention to detail
- Strong communication and people skills

- High moral and ethical standards
- Excellent report writing and presentation skills
