Satellite Systems and Control Design Engineer

Astrome is seeking a talented Satellite Systems and Control Design Engineer to contribute to our cutting-edge space technology initiatives. The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of satellite dynamics, orbital mechanics, and control systems. You will be involved in designing, analyzing, and implementing innovative solutions for satellite subsystems, such as attitude control, orbit determination, and telemetry and telecommand systems.

Responsibilities:

• Satellite Housekeeping: Oversee the satellite's housekeeping functions, ensuring the health and status of all onboard systems, including power management, communications, and onboard software.
• Uplink and Downlink of Payload Data: Manage the uplink and downlink operations for payload data, ensuring reliable transmission between the satellite and ground stations for mission-critical communication.
• Telemetry, Telecommand & Control Operations: Coordinate telemetry, telecommand, and control (TT&C) operations, facilitating real-time communication with the satellite, monitoring its status, and issuing commands to maintain optimal functionality.
• Attitude Estimation and Control: Develop and implement systems for satellite attitude estimation and control, ensuring accurate positioning and orientation in space for proper mission execution.
• Orbit Maintenance: Design and implement strategies for orbit maintenance, including maneuvers and adjustments, to ensure the satellite remains in its designated orbit throughout the mission.

Requirements

1. Technical Expertise:

• Strong knowledge of satellite systems engineering, including power, communications, propulsion, and payload subsystems.
• Expertise in attitude determination and control systems (ADCS), including sensors, actuators, and control algorithms for satellite orientation.
• In-depth understanding of orbit mechanics and experience with orbit maintenance and maneuver design.
• Proficiency in telecommunications systems, including uplink/downlink operations, telemetry, and telecommand protocols.
• Familiarity with control theory and designing feedback systems (e.g., PID control, Kalman filters) for satellite systems.
• Experience in embedded systems and real-time operating systems (RTOS) for onboard computing.

2. Software and Simulation:

• Proficient in simulation tools like MATLAB, Simulink, or STK for satellite mission modeling, control system simulation, and orbit prediction.
• Ability to design, test, and simulate satellite control algorithms and systems in a virtual environment before physical implementation.

3. Soft Skills:

• Excellent problem-solving skills to address complex satellite control and system integration challenges.
• Strong communication skills for conveying technical concepts clearly to team members and stakeholders.
• Effective project management skills to handle complex satellite design projects and meet deadlines.
• Ability to work collaboratively in cross-functional teams, coordinating with engineers from various subsystems.

4. Standards and Regulations:

• Knowledge of satellite system design standards (e.g., CCSDS, ISO) for communication, telemetry, and control operations.
• Familiarity with space mission regulations and mission design constraints, ensuring compliance with industry standards.
