Role Purpose

The intern will support the development of fundamental understanding of combustion, thermal, and/or mechanical processes in glass production for Optical Fiber and Advanced Optics products. Work duties include conducting experiments, designing test plans and exploring new ways to achieve desired material attributes. Additionally, the intern will be responsible for interpretation of experimental data, comparing with literature or modeling results, and writing and presenting a final report.

Key Responsibilities

The intern will conduct suitable background literature searches and execute a research plan

Document the research results and give a final presentation on project outputs

Learn new techniques and methods as needed to support the project objectives

Assist in the design of experiments, communicate observations, perform related measurements, collect and analyze data

Work with the project team to plan and carry out required experiments to advance progress against project objectives

Prepare testing specimens, perform routine operation of standardized testing, assist with non-standard experimentation and methods development, troubleshoot and maintain equipment

Work with heated chemical vapor delivery systems, burners, and handling of produced materials including high surface area powders and fragile objects

Experiences/Education - Required

Pursuing a Master or PhD degree in Chemical Engineering, Material Science, Mechanical Engineering, or a similar discipline

Ability to develop mechanistic hypothesis and an experimental plan to test the hypothesis

Ability to interact with a cross-functional team effectively

Excellent verbal and written communication skills

Experience of working in a research lab and writing technical reports

Willingness to work around air-sensitive chemistry, heated systems, open flames, and fine powders

Must be available to work for 10 weeks during Summer 2025 (May-August 2025) with a projected graduation date of December 2025 or later

The range for this position is $1,635.00 - $3,185.00 biweekly.

Starting pay for the successful applicant is prescribed based on geographic location, nature of position, and year in school.
