Mechanical and Thermal Design Engineer (Space Division)

Astrome is looking for a skilled Mechanical and Thermal Design Engineer to join our team. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in mechanical design, thermal analysis, and structural analysis. You will be responsible for designing and analyzing mechanical components, thermal systems, and structural elements for satellite systems. You will work closely with other engineers to ensure the overall system reliability and performance.

Responsibilities:

• Mechanical Architecture and Design: Develop and define the mechanical architecture of the satellite bus, ensuring optimal design and sizing to meet mission requirements and performance specifications.
• Structural Integrity: Ensure that the satellite bus structure is designed to withstand the rigorous launch loads, including shock, vibration, and acceleration forces, while maintaining operational integrity during the satellite's lifetime.
• Deployment Mechanisms Design: Design and implement various deployment mechanisms for satellite subsystems, ensuring smooth and reliable deployment of solar arrays, antennas, and other components in space.
• Thermal Design: Develop thermal management solutions to meet the temperature requirements of all satellite components, ensuring proper heat dissipation and maintaining the operational temperature range for critical systems throughout the mission.

Requirements

Technical Expertise:

• Proficiency in mechanical design of satellite bus structures, deployment mechanisms, and payload integration.
• Strong knowledge of thermal systems design, including thermal control, heat dissipation, and passive/active thermal management.
• Experience with Finite Element Analysis (FEA) tools (e.g., ANSYS, Abaqus) for structural and vibration analysis.
• Proficiency in thermal analysis software (e.g., Thermal Desktop, SINDA) for simulating heat transfer and thermal behavior.
• Skilled in CAD/CAE software (e.g., SolidWorks, CATIA) for 3D modeling and simulation.
• Expertise in materials selection for space applications, including structural and thermal components.

Testing and Validation:

• Experience in vibration, shock, and thermal testing to validate mechanical and thermal designs.
• Knowledge of structural sizing and ensuring compliance with launch and space environmental conditions.

Soft Skills:

• Strong attention to detail and ability to identify design issues and risks.
• Effective problem-solving skills for complex mechanical and thermal challenges.
• Ability to collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, including electrical and systems engineers.
• Excellent communication skills for presenting designs and collaborating with stakeholders.
• Project management skills to ensure efficient design processes and meet deadlines.

Standards and Regulations:

• Familiarity with spacecraft design standards (e.g., NASA, ESA) and launch vehicle interface requirements.
• Knowledge of failure modes analysis (FMEA) to identify and mitigate potential design risks.
