General Counsel

Part-time

This position is responsible for directing CPH's legal affairs in terms of contracts, contract negotiations, rights and permissions. Ensures communications, contracts, documents, and filings undergo a legal review. May engage and coordinate with outside counsel for certain matters. This position will be responsible for the management of the Contracts, Rights,Permissions Department.


Specific duties include:

  • Provide expert legal advice on a variety of legal matters, including intellectual property, contracts, and employment law.
  • Draft, review, and negotiate contracts with authors, vendors, distributors, and other partners to ensure favorable terms and compliance with company policies.
  • Manage and protect CPH's intellectual property portfolio, including trademarks and copyrights. Handle any related disputes or infringements.
  • Ensure the company adheres to all relevant laws and regulations, particularly those pertinent to the publishing industry and Christian content.
  • Develop, implement, and update company policies to promote legal compliance and best practices as requested.
  • Identify potential legal risks and work proactively to mitigate them. Provide training to staff on legal issues and risk management strategies.
  • Handle any legal disputes or litigation, working closely with external counsel when necessary.
  • Oversee the work, budgets, and performance of Contracts/Rights/Permissions, providing strategic and operational leadership.
  • Lead, train, and develop staff for maximum effectiveness in support of the corporate and department goals.


The ideal candidate will possess the following knowledge, skills, and abilities:

  • Mastery of corporate law.
  • Experience building, managing, and coaching teams.
  • Proven ability to collaborate and build relationships.
  • Ability to leverage data and research to help identify opportunities.
  • Sharp organizational and project management skills, with the ability to handle multiple projects and priorities simultaneously, meet deadlines, produce results and achieve goals.
  • Juris Doctor Undergraduate degree in a business related field is preferred.
  • Five years of experience in a combination of law firm and corporate setting or a not-for-profit environment.
  • Must have an established leadership record that includes effective staff management.
  • Active membership in an LCMS congregation is preferred.
  • Active bar membership in good standing.
