Assistant Prosecutor - Juvenile Division

Objectives

Individual is an Assistant Prosecuting Attorney, responsible for prosecution of unruly and delinquent acts by juveniles, traffic offenses by juveniles, and certain adult offenses falling within the jurisdiction of the Delaware County Court of Common Pleas, Juvenile Division. Individual is responsible for cases from initial case review, through filing of complaint, negotiation, trial, and post-adjudication stages. Physical presence is necessary in the office. Regular, predictable and prompt attendance is needed. Represents the Prosecuting Attorney and the State of Ohio in court and in the community, to law enforcement, to victims, to parents, to witnesses and to the general public.

Job Standards

Juris Doctor (JD)

Must possess a valid State of Ohio Driver's License and have an acceptable driving record.

Essential Functions

• Prosecutes juvenile delinquencies and unruly complaints
• Prosecutes all Delaware County juvenile traffic offenses where the juvenile denies the complaint
• Prosecutes all Delaware County truancy cases, against both juveniles and adults
• Prosecutes all Delaware County criminal cases against adults that fall within the jurisdiction of the juvenile court
• Advises law enforcement agencies as to additional investigation that may necessary for successful prosecution of assigned cases
• Meets and interacts with the victims, witnesses and parents of juvenile offenses to prepare them for potential court appearances
• Appears in juvenile court for arraignment, pretrial hearings, trial, sentencing and necessary post-conviction proceedings on assigned cases
• Writes appellate briefs and prosecutes appeals on behalf of the Delaware County Prosecutor and the State of Ohio
• Responds to all motions filed and files any appropriate motions necessary for the prosecution of assigned cases
• Represents Department of Job and Family Services in abuse/neglect/dependency cases, including appeals
• Handles matters as assigned for the Child Support Enforcement Agency
• Assists other Assistant County Prosecutors as needed in the preparation and presentation of criminal cases
• Other duties as assigned by the Prosecuting Attorney

Equipment:

Ability to operate normal office equipment such as computer, copier, fax machine, telephone, calculator, paper shredder, motor vehicle, and other equipment necessary to perform duties. Must be able to perform electronic and book legal research. Good understanding of and ability to use Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook and Power Point) and Internet (Explorer and Chrome).

Critical skills/expertise:

• Thorough knowledge of Ohio juvenile statutes, rules of evidence, case law, and procedure.

• Good legal research and writing skills.

• Competence in trial practice.

• Ability to manage a large, complex case load with minimal direct supervision, as well as work as part of a coordinated multidisciplinary team of professionals.

• Superior interpersonal skills, including the ability to deal with other people who possess widely varied levels of education and competence.

• Demonstrates integrity and reliability and ability to maintain confidentiality.

• Ability to evaluate risks and exercise sound judgment, making decisions in complex and sometimes ambiguous situations that carry important implications for the citizens of Delaware County.

• Ability to work under pressure.

• Ability to competently interact with co-workers and other members of various departments and agencies.
