What does a Teacher Assistant do?

A teacher assistant helps the main teacher in a classroom. They might also be called teacher's aides. Their job is to help students learn by working with them individually or in small groups. They also make lesson plans, keep track of progress, and help get things ready for lessons.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

  • Work with the main teacher to keep track of the class schedule.
  • Help teachers get ready for lessons by getting materials and setting up equipment.
  • Go over lesson material with students one-on-one or in small groups.
  • Make sure the classroom is clean and safe.
  • Watch over students during times when they are not in class, like between classes, lunchtime, and field trips.
  • Work with the main teacher to figure out problems students might be having and suggest solutions.
  • Keep track of how students are doing and talk to parents to keep them updated.
  • Assist the main teacher in making lesson plans.
  • Follow rules and regulations set by the state, school, and class.
  • Attend trainings, meetings with parents, and meetings with other teachers.

Requirements and Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Bachelor's degree in education or a related field preferred.
  • At least 2 years of experience as a teaching assistant or in a similar role.
  • Good understanding of teaching best practices and classroom activities.
  • Must be kind and have a positive attitude.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Great at working with people and giving presentations.
