What does a Registered Medical Assistant do?

They also keep track of patient files and medical records.

Job Description

We are looking for an experienced registered medical assistant to help create a welcoming and supportive environment for our patients. In this role, you will be responsible for keeping track of patient files, performing clinical evaluations, and making sure all equipment is properly sanitized. You may also be asked to help with treatments while under supervision.

To be successful in this role, registered medical assistants should be patient-oriented and have a good understanding of diagnostic procedures and minor treatments. The best candidates also have high standards when it comes to patient care and have experience with medical administration.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

  • Greeting and helping patients to make them feel welcome and comfortable.
  • Gathering personal and health information, organizing patient files, and updating electronic health records.
  • Assisting medical professionals with patient exams and minor procedures.
  • Recording vital signs and collecting and preparing lab samples.
  • Performing minor diagnostic tests and giving treatments while under supervision of other medical professionals.
  • Helping with administrative tasks such as scheduling appointments, arranging lab services and hospital admissions, handling billing, and filing insurance claims.
  • Communicating test and assessment results to other medical professionals.
  • Guiding patients through the facility and explaining procedures and treatments.
  • Keeping examination and procedure rooms stocked and clean.
  • Sterilizing medical equipment and keeping designated areas sanitized.

Requirements and Qualifications

  • An associate degree or certification in medical assisting from a program accredited by either the CAAHEP or ABHES.
  • At least 2 years of experience as a certified medical assistant (CMA).
  • The ability to work under supervision and monitor, report, and record a patient's condition.
  • Proficiency in record-keeping and using related software, such as AdvancedMD and NextGen.
  • Experience with clinical evaluations, collecting lab samples, and administering minor treatments.
  • The ability to assist medical professionals with exams and procedures.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills for interacting with and reassuring patients.
  • The ability to prioritize tasks and work well under pressure.
  • A good understanding of best practices in healthcare and sterilization protocols.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
