What does a Policy Analyst do?
A policy analyst is someone who examines policies to see how well they are working. They look at policies to see if they are achieving their goals, make changes to drafts of policies, and suggest ways to improve existing policies. They can work in different areas, like politics, health, education, professional services, and nonprofit organizations.
Job Description
We are looking for a knowledgeable policy analyst to review the policies that guide our organization. As a policy analyst, your job will be to review our current policies, make sure they still match our goals, and suggest ways to make them better. You may also need to talk to people outside of our organization.
To do this job well, you should have specialized knowledge and understand the legal aspects of creating policies. Great policy analysts give direction and advice that helps our organization make positive changes.
Job Duties and Responsibilities
- Use your specialized knowledge to evaluate our current policies
- Determine if our policies are still in line with our goals and objectives
- Talk to people inside and outside our organization to make sure we consider all important factors
- Identify the good and bad things, and things we might have missed, in our current policies
- Make sure our policies and any changes we make follow the law
- Write a report on what you find and suggest new policies or changes to our current ones
- Write the first version of new policies or changes and ask for feedback
- Make any needed changes and get the final version approved
- Write down the steps you take and share this information with everyone involved
Requirements and Qualifications
- A master's degree in a related field is preferred
- 2-3 years of experience analyzing policies
- Lots of experience making sure policies fit our goals
- Great at finding problems and things we might have missed in our policies
- Can come up with new policies or changes and write the first draft
- Knows a lot about the legal things we need to consider when making policies
- Very familiar with the usual ways to write policies
- Works well with people inside and outside our organization
- Can write reports and present what you find
- Great at keeping records and communicating with others
