What does a Optician do?

An optician helps people find the right glasses or contact lenses based on their eye prescriptions. They work with prescriptions from optometrists or ophthalmologists to advise customers on the best eyewear for their needs. This job is also called a dispensing optician.

Job Description

We are looking for a friendly optician who enjoys working with people to help them find the perfect eyewear. The optician will suggest specific glasses or contact lenses, take measurements, fit and adjust glasses, and teach customers how to properly use and care for their eyewear.

To be a successful optician, you should have good customer service skills and be able to communicate well with others. You should also be able to recommend different types of eyewear, like sports glasses or lenses for specific jobs. You may also suggest tints and anti-reflective coatings to customers.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

  • Get prescriptions from optometrists or ophthalmologists for customers
  • Take measurements of the eye area
  • Suggest glasses or contact lenses based on the customer's style, face shape, and needs
  • Adjust and fit glasses to match the prescription and the customer's preferences
  • Create work orders for technicians to make the lenses
  • Use special tools to measure and adjust glasses
  • Keep track of inventory to make sure there are enough options for customers
  • Repair broken glasses
  • Show customers how to use and take care of their glasses or contact lenses
  • Do administrative tasks, like managing prescriptions and customer information

Requirements and Qualifications

  • Associate's degree or certification in opticianry
  • Experience working in a clinic or similar setting
  • State license or certification to be an optician
  • Ability to use special equipment
  • Excellent customer service and sales skills
