What does a Direct Care Worker do?

A direct care worker, also known as a caregiver, is someone who provides support to clients who are unable to perform routine daily activities on their own. This could be due to disabilities, illness, or old age. Direct care workers assist with tasks such as running errands, helping with personal hygiene, and performing housekeeping duties.

Job Description

We are seeking a dedicated direct care worker to assist clients who have mobility limitations. Your responsibilities will include tasks such as housekeeping, helping with meals, and taking care of personal hygiene needs. As a direct care worker, you may also be asked to run errands for clients.

To be successful in this role, you should have knowledge of best practices in providing care and some experience in a similar position. Most importantly, we are looking for someone who can be trusted with the wellbeing of our clients and who demonstrates a caring approach.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assisting clients who cannot move around easily, are ill, or have limited mobility, by providing them with support, company, and comfort.
  • Administering prescribed medications and treatments as directed by healthcare providers.
  • Monitoring clients' physical, mental, and emotional conditions and reporting any changes to the appropriate parties.
  • Performing tasks such as personal hygiene care and housekeeping duties.
  • Preparing meals for clients and assisting them with eating and drinking.
  • Helping clients use incontinence products or providing assistance with bathroom visits.
  • Running errands, which may include grocery shopping and other household tasks.
  • Assisting clients in moving from their bed to a chair or wheelchair, and back.
  • Accompanying clients to appointments, such as medical visits.
  • Maintaining a clean, organized, and safe environment for clients.

Requirements and Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent (GED).
  • Completion of a National Caregiver Certification Course (NCCC) is preferred.
  • A minimum of 2 years of experience in a similar role is required.
  • Thorough understanding of best practices in providing direct care.
  • Experience in administering medications and treatments as prescribed.
  • Excellent ability to assist clients with mobility, personal care, and hygiene needs.
  • Capable of performing basic housekeeping tasks, running errands, and preparing meals.
  • Advanced skills in maintaining a clean and sterile environment and properly disposing of biological waste.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, a caring demeanor, and physically fit.
  • Willingness to work irregular hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
