What does a Church Custodian do?

A church custodian is responsible for keeping all public areas of the church clean and in good condition. This includes the sanctuary, bathrooms, meeting areas, and offices. They may also be referred to as church janitors or parish custodians.

Job Description

We are looking for a church custodian who is hardworking and respectful of different religious and cultural beliefs. Your main responsibility will be to ensure that all public areas of the church are clean and ready for use by staff and congregation members. This includes cleaning, making minor repairs, and restocking supplies like toilet paper and paper towels. You may also be responsible for managing supply inventory and helping out with special events like weddings or funerals.

To be successful in this role, you should be observant, respectful, and motivated to provide a clean and orderly place for people to worship and gather. You should also have knowledge of proper cleaning techniques and the ability to make basic repairs, such as plumbing and electrical work.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

  • Cleaning all public areas of the church, including bathrooms, sanctuary, kitchens, and meeting rooms, on a weekly basis.
  • Working with other maintenance team members and church staff to ensure all areas are clean and stocked with necessary items.
  • Following proper safety procedures when using cleaning agents and performing maintenance tasks.
  • Making minor repairs and restocking supplies as needed.
  • Assisting with event preparations and clean-up.
  • Taking inventory of cleaning supplies and submitting requests for replenishment.
  • Interacting with church staff and visitors in a respectful and positive manner.

Requirements and Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Prior custodial experience or training may be required.
  • Understanding of proper cleaning techniques and safety procedures.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and pass a background check and pre-employment drug screening.
  • Some churches may give preference to members.
  • Strong communication, comprehension, and interpersonal skills.
  • Flexibility to adjust schedule to meet the needs of the church.
  • Motivation to work independently or with others to provide thorough and efficient custodial services to the church.
